Memoirs Of A Ski Resort Bunny
Yes, I admit it. I am a ski bunny. I will travel anywhere for snow; no ski resort is too far away or too expensive for me. I live for skiing. What’s not to love? I look great in ski clothes; I love the taste of snow, and I don’t bruise easily. Of course, I have fallen a few times and learned that snow tastes great when my face hits the ground.
Anyone who has ever been on a ski vacation has tasted the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Just watch the Olympics and those athletes are much better than I am. I will be the first to admit that I am not the greatest skier in the world but I defy anyone to enjoy the art of skiing more than I do.
If you are a little nervous and have never skied before, book a ski resort with good teachers and the ubiquitous bunny slope. Don’t be embarrassed to be learning with little kids. Remember a trip of a thousand miles starts with the first step or first slope in this case. Start slow and learn before you try the harder slopes. Your life and the lives of others depend on your knowing what you are doing when you head down that slope.
If you are just starting out, do not buy a lot of expensive ski or snowboarding clothing, ski equipment, and other paraphernalia. You can rent or buy most anything you want at the ski resort you book. Actually, the rental fees are pretty reasonable. Who knows? You may not enjoy the sport and may prefer drinking hot chocolate in the resort lobby. Many people go to ski resorts with no intention of hitting the slopes. They come to mingle with other people, enjoy the snow, and shop in the lovely village shops nearby. Nothing wrong with that. It frees the slopes for us addicts.
I have skied all over the world but enjoy the American ski resorts just as well as the European ones and I don’t have to fly so far, learn a new language, and figure out foreign money. My first love is Colorado ski resorts; they are the best and most beautiful. The mountains are incredible and you will find some of the most proficient skiers in America there.
Another place I love is Utah ski resorts. They are not far from where I live so travel is not nearly as expensive and time-consuming. I can even fly there and ski for a weekend. Even closer are the ski resorts in North Carolina. The mountains are not as beautiful and are much less intimidating if you are a newbie. If you live up North, check out ski resorts in New York; they are absolutely gorgeous and you get to meet some real eligible bachelors who live in the city and go to the ski resorts for the weekend looking for ski bunnies and even some skiing. I have found that socializing in the New York lodges is great for singles and families too.
Now I haven’t spent a lot of time in the Virginia ski lodges but have heard that their Southern hospitality is not to be missed. The skiing is great too.
If you want to make skiing your hobby and have tried it enough to know you want your own things, these are the must haves and must takes. You should have a double ski hat, snowboard boots, crisp ski boots, snowboarding jackets, skiing sunglasses, snowboarding pants and tops, and heavy gloves. I know I often use the word snowboarding rather than skiing, but the accouterments are the same. You obviously need great skis, a cool snowboard, and wax for taking care of your equipment. You probably want a pair of cheap snow goggles too; I wouldn’t spend a lot on them because you tend to lose them pretty easily. Also, invest in some snowboard protective gear which is sold most anywhere there is snowboarding. I prefer skiing but many people love snowboarding too and do both.
If you are a newbie, do some research before you go. Research basic tips for snowboarding and skiing. Research ski resorts in the United States and Canada. I love Ontario ski vacations and any Canada ski vacation. I pretty much love skiing any time anywhere. I even search for cheap ski vacations when my skiing budget is low.
If you have children, research ski vacations for kids and you will find places that are kid friendly. You certainly don’t want to take your children for their first ski experience to a place where children don’t seem to be a priority. These family ski resorts are getting more and more popular. You might want to buy their gear before you go unless you know for sure your ski resort has your child’s sizes. You can find children’s ski equipment online. Research children’s snowboard boots, kids snowboard jackets, and maybe even pink snowboards for the little girls in your family. Research before you go, buy or rent the equipment, and have the time of your life.
Skiing is great exercise, a wonderful way to play in the snow, and the perfect opportunity to meet people. That’s why I am a self-avowed snow bunny and proud of it.
