Alpine Ski Resort For A Touch Of Class
Most of us picture a cute little chalet on top of a snow covered mountain when we think of an alpine ski resort. In some cases this might be true. You can certainly rent a chalet in most areas, but most ski resorts are quite a lot grander than that. They are built so that you can do everything you would like all in the resort. Alpine actually refers to the Alps, a mountain range in Europe, but a lot of mountain resorts have borrowed the name. It just sounds so quaint. I have been to so called “Alpine villages” in several areas of the U.S., but the resorts I am writing about today are actually in the Alps.
Switzerland comes to mind right away when you think of the Alps and indeed some of the top ski resorts are in Switzerland. The most famous is without a doubt St. Moritz. It’s a glitzy resort that twice hosted the winter Olympics and is the playground of the rich and famous. The trademark of Zermatt is the Matterhorn. Zermatt is a car-free mountain village with year-round skiing on the glacier snowfields. You don’t need a car. You can walk all over the resort where elegant boutiques are a stone’s throw away from working cattle stables. Grindelwald is at the base of Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch. These mountains have been immortalized in several films, including the James Bond thriller, In Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Austria has its share of alpine ski resorts as well. Kitzbuhel is a 700 year old mining town and every January the focus is on the Hahnenkamm, said to be the most challenging downhill course on the World Cup circuit. This being said, even intermediate skiers can find trails they can navigate. St. Anton is known as the cradle of alpine skiing. The resort is a traditional Tyrolean village and is famous for its après ski nightlife. Seefeld and Lech/Zurs also offer great skiing, friendly service and a large variety of shops and restaurants.
The Alps highest mountain, Mont Blanc towers over Chamonix, France. Chamonix was the location of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. There are several separate ski areas, the most famous being Vallee Blanche, a twelve mile off trail descent form the Mar du Glace glacier.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy offers traditional laid back Italian style of winter vacations. The excellent food, wine, and strolls among the boutiques are every bit as important as the skiing. Cortina was also a host of the Winter Olympics in 1956.
If you are traveling to Europe, don’t miss the chance to spend some time at an Alpine ski resort. It is an experience not to be missed.
