When you think of Aspen Ski Resorts, celebrities come to mind. It seems that the rich and famous flock to ski in Aspen. Aspen has plenty to offer the ordinary folks too. There are four mountains in the Aspen resorts area and while some cater to expert skiers, there are some with beginner trails. Not every place is expensive. In fact, there are some reasonably priced options. The economy has forced resorts to compete for vacation dollars, so check around. You might just find a bargain.
In this article, you'll learn more about four of the best Aspen ski resorts – Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass.
Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax is the place to go if you are an expert skier. There are no beginner trails on this mountain. There are 673 acres available for skiing and they have vertical drops of three thousand feet. Skiers come from all over the world to ski this world class course. Seven lifts and one gondola will take you to the summit. It is very easy to access from downtown Aspen. The lift tickets are costly so some guests choose to ski the surrounding areas. The Hotel Jerome and Hotel Aspen provide excellent lodging. There are also numerous condos and homes for rent.
Aspen Highlands Ski resort is less crowded and where the locals hang out. There are two high speed quads to take you to the summit and Loge Peak where you can enjoy the spectacular views. While nearly half of the trails are rated expert, intermediate and beginning skiers will find trails to their liking at the bottom of the mountain. This resort has been around since 1958 and provides both beginner and intermediate terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Whether you want to ski, snowboard or snow tube, you'll find your ideal trail or slope here! The incredible variety is one reason why lots of Aspen locals choose to ski the Highlands themselves. Even if you visit the Highlands in the warmer months, you'll find plenty to do. There are lots of fun activities like horseback riding, fishing, and mountain biking for summer vacationers to enjoy.
Buttermilk ski resort is one of the most popular in Aspen today and, until 2008, is the home of the ESPN Winter X Games. Although Buttermilk is smaller than many of the other ski resorts in Aspen, it's preferred by many skiers and snowboarders. If you're a beginner like I am, then you'll love the ski school which offers lessons for both children and adults. If snowboarding is your preferred winter sport, you'll love Buttermilk's miles of boarding terrain which features more than 25 rails and a superpipe. This resort is adjacent to fantastic shopping, dining and accommodations for vacationers to enjoy. It’s just a few miles from Aspen.
While Buttermilk may be one of the smallest Aspen resorts, Snowmass is one of the largest. In fact, Snowmass Ski Resort is the second largest in Colorado. It is located only 9 miles from the airport and is in one of the most prestigious communities in the West. People come from all over the world to ski Snowmass. One of the cool things about this resort is that it shares a lift ticket with Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. Skiers and boarders will love the incredible variety of trails, slopes and terrain for all skill levels. Snowmass offers world-class lodging, great food, and even incredible shopping and is located only a few minutes from the heart of Aspen. This resort caters to everyone from honeymooning couples to large families and even corporate groups. There are a number of condos and vacation rentals to choose from.
