Steamboat Ski Resort Has Many Activities Besides Skiing.
Steamboat Ski Resort, located in Northwestern Colorado opened as a ski resort in 1963. With 165 named trails and a consistent snowfall of over 400 inches per year, it boasts more winter Olympians than any other resort. Steamboat Springs was a ranching town long before it became a resort and the people are friendly and unpretentious. There is an annual Cowboy Downhill that attracts rodeo stars from all over the country and the Winter Carnival is a family friendly adventure. There you will see the world’s only high school marching band on skis.
Of the 165 trails spread over nearly three thousand acres, 14% are for beginners, 42% for intermediate, and 44% for advanced skiers. In addition Steamboat is home to the Maverick Superpipe for snowboarders. For those unfamiliar with snowboarding, the pipe consists of two concave ramps with a flat area in the middle to allow the snowboarders to regain stability. They are able to achieve extreme speed and the design allows for many aerial tricks.
While it doesn’t have the bowls associated with Vail, it does offer some spectacular tree skiing In Closets and Shadows. You will get quite a workout on this run before you retire to a lodge to relax. You can ski with Olympians like Billy Kidd and Nelson Carmichael. Steamboat is famous for its knee deep “champagne powder” making skiing effortless.
There are many hotels, lodges, condos, and downtown lofts to stay in. There is an ample shuttle and gondola system to help you get around easily. There are lots of restaurants and the newly opened Ghost Ranch Saloon provides live entertainment. If you get tired of the skiing, you can dog sled, snowshoe, sleigh ride, or ice skate at an Olympic size rink. When you are completely exhausted, relax in the nearby Strawberry Park Hot Springs.

Within a half mile of the mountain, there are at least ten hotels and dozens of condos and private homes to rent. They range from luxury accommodations to budget friendly places to stay.
